چکیده

Genetic evidence at predation sites is rapidly improving predator-prey interaction studies and can provide information beyond field-based investigations. However, factors contributing to the retention of genetic have received limited investigation in a field setting, researchers yet leverage improve traditional Using data from 61 mortality investigations mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), white-tailed (O. virginianus), elk (Cervus canadensis), we evaluated influencing predator DNA amplification success misidentification predators We found that was detected more for prey with higher body mass (18.5% increase per standard deviation [23.1 kg] carcass above mean [32.8 kg]). Predator also 27.0% likely amplify when collected kill had not undergone freeze-thaw cycle between investigation. The delay investigation, swabbing surface, amount precipitation did influence DNA. Misidentifications based on ID were influenced by or investigator confidence level, suggesting investigators should collect even they feel certain about predator. Errors identifying during increased smaller mass, actually be misidentified than correctly identified fawns calves < ~21 kg. Black bears (Ursus americanus), bobcats (Lynx rufus), cougars (Puma concolor), coyotes (Canis latrans), wolves (C. lupus) equally missed but tended falsely assigned expected as less expected. validation, showed how patterns signs left differed some species depending size prey. Our findings help managers optimize their use genetics enhance

Wildlife Conservation Education

Emerging challenges of wildlife conservation require a multipronged approach in order to have a lasting impact. Conservation of wildlife species, their habitats, and other natural ecosystems such as water catchment areas and wetlands are increasingly coming under intense pressure and threat of extirpation. The pressure is as a result of an increase in human population, changing land uses, and t...

Investigating the potential of opportunistic sighting data to inform wildlife conservation strategies

8 Abundance and space use are key population-level parameters used to inform management and conservation decisions 9 of rare and elusive species, for which monitoring resources can be limited, potentially affecting quality of 10 model-based inference. Recently-developed methods that integrate multiple data sources arising from the same 11 ecological process have typically been focused on data f...
